The tale of brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel is a much loved story recorded by the Brothers Grimm. It is a story of how pair of young children are abandoned by their wicked stepmother in the forest, but through their own resourcefulness find their way back. On their wanderings they find a house made out of gingerbread and other confectionary owned by an evil witch who lures then inside and traps them. Eventually, they foil the witch who gets burnt in an oven and joyfully find there way back to find that their wicked stepmother is dead.

The story of Hansel and Gretel was made into an opera written by the German Composer, Engelbert Humperdinkck and first performed in 1893. Since then there have been other operatic adaptations and live action movies, including the 2002 movie, Hansel and Gretel featuring Dakota Fanning and Lynn Redgrave.

The German costumes include traditional folk clothing such as the Dirndl and Lederhosen. A Dirndl is a dress that consists of many garments that make up an entire ensemble. It has a bodice that is worn with a blouse, a full skirt and sometimes an apron. Today Dirndls tend to be brightly colored and a knot on the apron indicates that a woman is married.  Lederhosen are leather knee breeches won by men originally in the Alpine areas. They were traditionally worn by German boys until the age of 16.

One of the most famous festivals held in Germany is the Oktoberfest which traditionally runs for 16 days from late September to early October. This huge event usually attracts about six million people and is a time where people dress in traditional Bavarian costume including Lederhosen for the boys and Dirndls for the girls.

It is also customary for people to wear cowboy-shaped hats containing a tuft of goat hair. Goat hair is highly prized in Germany and the more tufts of goat hair you wear on your hat the richer you are thought to be.

Oktoberfest is an excuse to eat huge amounts of food and drink lots of beer. Traditional fare includes Hendl (chicken), Schweinsbraten (roast pork), Wurstl (sausages), Sauerkraut (cabbage), Brezn (pretzel) and Knodeln (dumplings).

Germany is also famous for its beer gardens, an open air area where drinks and food are served. Beer gardens have become such an important part of German life, not only for drinking but also for eating traditional German food.

You can certainly have lots of fun wearing a German costume for your Halloween party – just make sure you drink plenty of beer! “Prost!”
